Cat Marshall

Clarinet · Singing · THEORY • Early Music Skills

Hi, I'm Cat. I am a qualified teacher with a PGCE from Canterbury Christ Church (via Teach First) and a Music degree from the University of Surrey. I’ve been teaching privately and in classrooms for over ten years, have held two Head of Music positions and work with both children and adults.

I currently offer private lessons in clarinet, singing, music theory (included in all practical lessons or as tutoring sessions) and early music skills. I do offer some online lessons but I prefer to come to you!

Pricing starts from £43 per hour lesson or instrumental and singing lessons, and £23 per 40 minute Early Music Skills session.

Term-time block bookings, flexible slots, and short-term options are all available.

INSTRUMENTAL & SINGING

For instrumental and vocal lessons, we can work towards grades, a specific goal or casually for enjoyment and confidence. I support with graded exam prep (ABRSM, Rockschool, Trinity, MTB), and also offer one-off specialist sessions if you're preparing for something specific.

Something I feel strongly about is that progress looks different for everybody. Lessons don't have to look traditional or formal for progress to happen. I have taught in formal student environments but I have also taught sat on the floor in comfy clothes with a cup of tea in hand. I come equipped with lesson plans and units, but it's when the student takes our lessons to somewhere unexpected that the best musical moments happen. I'm always learning from how students learn and the pathways they find and I'm open to all ways of learning.

I find it's always worth mentioning that I have enjoyed many wonderful lessons with neurodivergent children (and adults) who might need a specific approach, organisation support, flexible schedules, a little more processing time, differentiated resources or support with the sensory aspects that can come with learning an instrument.

EARLY MUSIC SKILLS FOR CHILDREN

Early music skills are a great starting point for children aged 5 and up (Year 1+), and include a mix of singing, keyboard skills, ukulele, woodwind and percussion. These sessions help young learners build musical confidence and develop an awareness of rhythm and pitch, while giving them the space to explore and find what they enjoy.

I first realised how much I loved working with younger children while teaching in an all-through school, delivering music lessons to Reception and up for the first time. I realised how children are often encouraged to pick an instrument very early on, often based on what happens to be available at home or school.

I find myself saying to children "we play music!"all the time - almost as a reminder to myself sometimes! And that's how I approach early music skills sessions. A space for play with a whole “toy box” of instruments to explore, while still modelling respect for music and our equipment. I'm a multi-instrumentalist myself and I find joy in variety. Recorder might lead to saxophone, ukulele to bass guitar, glockenspiel to piano or they might have an instrument available at home we can explore together.
